OIT provides all students an initial 250 MB of email storage space on the Duke network. You can increase your quota, if necessary. The network is backed up daily, so if you accidentally delete or lose some of your email, the OIT Service Desk may be able to recover it.
OIT offers support for instant messaging, a popular and convenient real-time tool for communication with people at Duke and elsewhere. Duke uses Jabber for IM because of its open standards based approach, security, and the availability of client software for multiple platforms.
Duke OIT offers an electronic group scheduling system, dCal, to all members of the university community. Detailed information on individual sign up and general FAQs are available at http://dcal.duke.edu.
NotifyLink synchronizes the DukeMail email service and dCal calendar service with mobile data devices such as BlackBerry, Palm, and Windows Mobile devices.
Duke has introduced text messaging, also known as SMS (short message service), as part of its DukeALERT system to enable broad and rapid notification of faculty, staff and students in the event of an emergency.
