Facilities Design Guidelines

These guidelines are intended to inform planners, architects, engineers, and contractors of the minimum infrastructure requirements of Duke University and Duke University Health System. These requirements must be met for all on- and off-campus Duke facilities.

Service Life Cycle

The service life cycle process provides a framework for initiating a project, guiding it through the standard phases of project management, and making a product or service part of organization's operational offering. Integral to the methodology is the use of document templates, from project proposal to operational and service level agreements. These templates are guides to the practitioner, prompting him or her to ask questions throughout the process and cover key areas or concerns.

SLAs and OLAs

OIT and DHTS worked collectively to create a process and templates for Service Level and Operating Level Agreements that provide a consistent and effective means of documenting the technical services and support we provide to our customer base.

Safe Computing

Make sure you're not putting your computer in danger or contributing to the spread of viruses on campus and beyond.

Active Directory

Active Directory is a Windows-based directory service used to centralize authentication and administration of Windows hosts. OIT provides and maintains an AD forest for department use, including supporting services such as DNS, WINS, Kerberos, and Time Synchronization. The AD domain (win.duke.edu) consists of four Windows 2003 domain controllers, running in full Windows 2003 functional mode. There are currently no subdomains, but departments can request a fully delegated organizational unit to manage their users, computers, and group policy objects. To request a fully delegated organizational unity (OU) for your department, please contact the OIT Service Desk.

Novell eDirectory

The Duke_University tree is a cooperative effort between Duke University and DHTS. OIT maintains the root of the tree and supporting services including SLP and Time Synchronization. The tree is divided in to multiple partitions which are replicated for fault-tolerance and distributed across the campus to improve performance. Departmental admins have full control over their organizational units (OUs) while users can be granted access to resources in any location in the tree. This allows for a high degree of collaboration while ensuring maximum security and an efficient use of campus resources. Departments who choose to join the campus eDirectory tree can also implement other eDirectory integrated services such as: iPrint, NetStorage, iFolder, Zenworks, Groupwise, and Novell Cluster Services using Novell’s Open Enterprise Server running either on NetWare or Suse Linux kernels. To request a fully delegated organizational unity (OU) for your department, please contact the OIT Service Desk.
